Web Design and development process

First Things First

So you have decided that your business needs a website but you don’t know how to go about getting your company or products out there on the world wide web, well the first thing I would recommend before we go any further is for you to go search for websites that offers the same services and or products that you or your business offers.

The reason for this is for you to get a better idea of what exactly you want your website to be able to and makes it easier for us to understand what you have in mind for your businesses website, the second thing I would recommend is for you to go and have a look at websites this can be any website it does not have to be anything related to your business but what I want is for you look for layouts and designs you like, this way it makes designing your website in a way that you would be happy with it so much easier.

A few questions you need to ask yourself is:

  • Will your website be a tool to communicate with existing clients or do you want it to generate leads for new business?
  • Do you want to be able to sell your products and services directly from your website or would you prefer for your website to generate sales leads for you?
  • Do you want to be able to add and update content on your website yourself or don’t you think there would be that me regular updates on your website?
  • Will your website require any special functionalities and features?
  • How much are you willing to spend on your website?

Once you have answered all these questions and once you have a better idea of what your website needs to do and how you want your website to look and feel, you will have to tell me more about your business and your idea for your website.

Remember your website will not only be a portfolio of what you or your business offer to the outside world but it will be a image of your company and therefor you will want it to look good and send out a clear message to the world of who you are and what you have to offer.

A very important thing to keep in mind when getting anyone to design and build a website for you is that you website needs to be developed in a search engine friendly way, many web developers say there website are search engine friendly when in fact they are not. The best looking website that offers the best services and products in the world will not mean anything for your business if it is not optimized for search engines to enable people to find your site on the world wide web.

Search Engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and all the others have certain rules and standards that your websites has to have in order for them to rank your website well, a high ranking website will be on the first page of a search engine when a user searches for something relevant to that website.

How my process works for design and developing your website.

Step 1.

We have answered all the questions above and I have an idea of want you want, from here I will start designing your website and built the basic framework and layout for you website.

Step 2.

Once you are happy with the layout and the design of your website we have to start adding content to your website, content is basically all the information that has to be on your website. Content includes all the text or copy and photos that you want to have on your website, all of the content needs to be provided by you the client or I can recommend some copywriters and photographers to help you create unique content relevant to your company and products.

Step 3.

By now we hopefully have all the content and here I will start creating all the additional pages and populate your website with your content.

Step 4.

Now once you are happy the website is almost finished here I will now do a bit of search engine optimization on your site to make sure your site is completely search engine friendly and then I will make sure that every aspect of your website complies with the w3.org web standards and only once your site is fully web compliant and search engine friendly we can move on to get your site on the the world wide web.

Step 5.

Your website should be done now and now you will have to sign it of and it has been signed off you will need to decide on whether you want your website hosted through me or whether you want to have it hosted somewhere else, once we have confirmation on where your website will be hosted we will register your domain name. A domain name is basically the name of your website e.g. www.yoursite.co.za

Step 6.

Now that your website is done and your domain name is registered I will upload your website to your domain name and submit your website to all the major search engines for indexing so that users can start finding your website.

What happens next?

Well from here on my initial work is done, it is up to you now to decide on how you want to further market your website for people to you on the internet your website might be search engine friendly but this doesn’t mean you will start getting traffic to your website the thing is search engine optimization (SEO) never ends and then there are other ways to drive traffic to your website and this is called search engine marketing (SEM) these include pay per click advertising and other online marketing tools.

Now its up to you on whether you want us to go further and start making your website work for you or whether you first want to wait and see how it does on its own, I can give you a lot of advise on methods to drive traffic to your website without spending any money at all.
